Dear Lilbbs,

Blue's Story

I started making music as a bit in 2018 using the music persona Lilbluebeluga. A gay, non-binary singing whale that also happens to be a Soundcloud artist. This was before I came out or knew who I was. (You know, doing that thing, where you hide behind a mask as a performer.)

It wasn’t until 2020 that I committed to and began my performing arts career.

Then…

On July 16, 2021, I injured my right hand and wrist while working as a Registered Nurse. Unfortunately, I returned to work too soon, and my injury worsened, and I could not play piano with my right hand for over six months. In addition, I had problems writing using my right hand and attending to other activities of daily living, and I still have chronic pain from time to time.

In retrospect, it was one best thing that happened to me.

Hours before my injury, I told my boss I was quitting my full-time position to return to school in September to start a Music Therapy diploma. The school was incredibly accommodating to my injury and accessibility needs. I took two semesters of vocal and left-handed piano lessons, music theory classes, ear training, and music history.

I introduced comedy to my performing art career plans in December 2021 and started taking improv classes in March 2022, later taking a stand up course in June 2022.

I have been slowly coming out and coming up to my community as non-binary, and I recently chose the name Blue as it genuinely feels like me. And the more I create my art and find my voice on stage, it helps me discover who I am, and I hope it encourages others to be who they are.

I’ve been performing all summer at a local open mic, and I performed my first 5 minutes music comedy set as part of a student showcase. It was the first time I performed as Blue, and it was amazing!

I returned to nursing after being off for a year in July 2022. I quickly realized within the first two weeks that it was not the place for me. Everything felt wrong, and the work environment was not inviting or supportive of its staff. I resigned from my position the day after I performed my 5-minute set. I feel confident in that decision.

So what’s the plan? What’s in store, Blue?

Well, the intentions for the Fall are the following:

September back to full-time studies, switch to Music Diploma for performing arts majoring in Piano studies. I will also be taking bass guitar lessons. And my intention with school is to become a better musician.

I will continue to hit up open mic to test my jokes and practice performing my original songs from my album. In addition, I am working on finishing my website, doing the promotions campaign for my album release, organizing a photoshoot, and working on a small concert for my album.

I plan to organize a concert where it will also be taped, so I can set it off and apply for music festivals in Summer 2023.

I am working on the foundations for a range of different set lists to perform so that I can apply to the Fringe festivals in Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton. I have friends and family, so I can stay with them when I perform there!

As I go about my career, I actively seek collaboration and work opportunities with women, non-binary and BIPOC members within the arts community.

You are loved. You are beautiful. Rest when you are well, not just when unwell.
